FOR THOSE EDUCATORS too fearful to join Facebook or MySpace, this column will introduce you to social networking opportunities for grown-ups, specifically professionals. I am not trying dissuade you from joining FaceBook or MySpace, especially if you want to check out your teenagers or your students on these sites, but I am offering some alternatives. Let's start first with some background and definitions. As you know from previous columns, the emergence of Web 2.0 is dramatically changing how we use the Web. The focus of Web 2.0 is about connecting people to boost their knowledge and allow them to learn from each other. "Web 2.0 tools are focused on communication, collaboration, interactivity, connecting with people and creating value through the sharing of ideas and making use of the collective wisdom of the web community" (1). Because this is a major focus, many equate Web 2.0 tools with the term social software.
