Description

Decisions to initiate or continue the use of life-sustaining treatments (LST) with patients of any age, and with elderly people in particular, involve ethical dilemmas and conflicts for health care providers, patients, and families (Clarke, Goldstein, & Raffin, 1994; Dorr Goold, Williams, & Arnold, 2000). Given the difficulty involved in decision making regarding end-of-life care in general, and life-sustaining treatments in particular, use of interdisciplinary teams for discussing these issues is of utmost importance (Joseph & Conrad, 1989; Solomon et al., 1993). Hospital-based teams (known as palliative care teams, supportive care teams, or symptom assessment teams) frequently consist of a physician, a nurse, and a social worker. Their goal is to help the patient and family with the difficult decision-making process regarding LST. Research has demonstrated that medical decisions regarding the use of LST are based on patients' age and physicians' preferences more than on prognoses or patients' preferences (Hamel et al., 1999). Attitudes and beliefs of other professionals involved in end-of-life care also influence these decisions. The increased use of interdisciplinary teams (Shoefield & Amodeo, 1999) suggests a need to examine and compare the attitudes of the disciplines involved in the decision-making process at the end of life.
